Why Does Language Complexity Resist Measurement?

چکیده

Insofar as linguists operate with a conception of languages closed and self-contained systems, there should be no obstacle to comparing those systems in terms simplicity complexity. Even if complexity ‘trade-offs’ between sub-systems phonology, morphology syntax are considered, it ought relatively straightforward quantify constitutive elements rules, assign each language system its place on scale. In practice, however, such attempts have turned up series problems paradoxes, which can seen work by Peter Trudgill Johanna Nichols; the latter has proposed an alternative means measuring presents new own. Why does language laterality index vary?

Introduction A strong motivation for clinical use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is to determine functional language lateralisation prior to neurosurgery.
